Little Step No. 38

Step No.38

What to do:

Know WHY peppermint tea is SO remarkable (beyond digestion).

Why this step works:

Best known for being a natural support for digestion, peppermint tea can be really helpful for easing symptoms such as bloating and gas after meals, and this is one reason why I always keep a stash in my kitchen cupboard.

There’s another reason why peppermint tea can be a bit of a saviour; one which I think is quite incredible but not many people know about.

Peppermint tea not only supports digestion but can also support your ability to relax.  Imagine your nervous system has an ON & OFF switch. The ON switch gets your brain firing on all cylinders – you really need this for learning, memory, activity and getting stuff done. In contrast, the OFF switch quietens everything down and supports relaxation, peace and calm. As you can imagine, we all need both, and daily wellbeing relies on a delicate balance between the two.

In today's fast-paced world, it's the OFF switch that people often struggle with, both during the day and in the evening too. This is where peppermint tea can come in handy. It contains an incredible plant compound called rosmarinic acid which supports the activity of a brain chemical called GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid). In simplified terms, GABA can act as an OFF switch; it supports the ability to feel calm and relaxed during the day or evening and also helps to promote restful sleep.

If ever you’re feeling edgy, wired or struggling to switch off, at any time of the day or evening, show yourself some kindness and try a simple cup of peppermint tea. I love this step precisely because of its simplicity - the last thing you need if you're struggling to switch off is something complicated to make you feel more stressed. All you need for this step is your favourite mug and a tea bag. My favourites are Heath & Heather or Clipper. It may seem like a teeny tiny little step but in what can sometimes feel like a frantic world, it's one that has real potential to nurture a gentle sense of inner calm.

And relax x
