Why this step works:

Little step no 31 may sound too simple to be of value, yet don’t let that put you off, there’s incredible potential in this one. If you feel ready to make some changes to your diet but don’t know where to begin, here is a great place to start. All you need is a notebook and pen. Simply write down what you eat and drink over the course of one day. That’s it.

But what’s the point? The point of this little step is to gently bring awareness to some current habits. Many food and drink choices are made habitually, and habits are powerful things, so it’s easy to follow the same patterns day in, day out without really noticing them. This is all fine if you’re happy with your choices but not so great if you want to make some changes.

The first step to changing habits is bringing more awareness to what you’re doing right now. And noting down what you eat and drink for just one day is a great way to start this. Just like when the sun rises in the morning we see things more clearly; the process of change starts by shining a light on your current habits. Once you’re more aware of what you’re doing, you're more likely to start thinking about how you want things to change.

If this little step resonates with you and you’re ready to have a go, I encourage you to tread with kindness and curiosity, rather than judgement.  As my good friend Mandy Pearson wrote in our book, “lose the judgement, choose curiosity instead. Judgement closes you down and locks you into position; it is the enemy of change. When you feel judged or criticised you’re unlikely to be in a resourceful place. Change requires you to feel positive, open and creative. Make friends with curiosity because it creates those states.”

This is a small but potentially powerful little step. Enjoy the week ahead and I'd love to hear how you get on x
